I debated and could not make up my mind on two colors. I had a teal blue picked out and a sunny yellow. My gut was telling me go with the sunny yellow. I have always wanted a yellow front door and the practical side of me was saying go with the teal blue. It will match all my cottage summer decor on the porch and it will be better looking for the door in winter.
So the hubby and I went to Home Depot and while he was off looking for a few things I still had some time to ponder the color. Let me say the hubby was not real thrilled about painting the wood door since it matched the garage door. He reluctantly agreed to go ahead and paint the door.
So while I was walking around Home Depot trying to decide on my color choice for the door I happened upon a front door in the clearance aisle at Home Depot.
Hmmmm I thought I think I may just have a solution to my delima that will make the hubby happy too. So I thought hey this clearance door looks really cottage and is cheap and I could paint that the yellow to give me a great little summer cottage door and then I would not have to paint the wood door and could re hang that in the winter. Brilliant!!!! So I was feeling better about painting a cottage front door.
When I still was debating on the color for the new front door. I asked anyone that would give me an opinion and of course everyone was torn between the two colors too. Not much help there.
It actually was pretty funny because I hung the two colors on my door and stood out on the grass and stared at them like they would some how talk to me. About three sets of walkers came by and pretty soon there were six of us standing on the front grass staring at the two colors I had hanging on the door. Half the walkers were saying definitely the yellow with the flowers and it will pop more and of course 50% saying no go with the teal to match the decor!!!! So no help there I was still stuck!!!! That is when we went to Home Depot!
So I just went with my gut on this and chose the yellow. I wanted a summer yellow door since I saw this on a really cute lake home last summer. I wanted a more cottage welcome at the front door! So here is the process we did and the finish look.
Here is my front door and I put up my two picks to see which one I might like better. |

Here's a little DIY tip. Add this stuff to your paint and you will never get brush marks. Helps the paint to seal to the door too. |

I think yellow was a great choice as the door really stands out against your house. I love yellow too, infact I painted my whole house that colour! take care, Maryann
ReplyDeleteLOVE the new cottage door AND that great yellow!
ReplyDeleteI was for yellow from the get go. And when I saw the finished pic, I knew we were right. ;)Very nice!! And wise decision on getting the clearance door so you could always change back. It's always a good idea for hubby AND wifey to be happy. :)I learned a long time ago that if I had to convince my husband of something, it never turned out well. He has no décor sense, lol, so I usually do it his way and when he sees it wasn't such a great idea after all, he tells me go ahead and do what I want. ha
ReplyDeleteI love the yellow door...so pretty!
ReplyDeleteI love the yellow! Great choice! I changed my door a few months ago. Loved the change!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh - I LOVE the yellow. Let me say that again - I LOVE THE YELLOW! The BEST choice! Love it, love it, love it!
ReplyDeleteI love your yellow door and the teal in the wreath ties it all together. It is perfect. Hugs, Marty

Amy Jo,

Kris
Kris,
ReplyDeleteMy choice was the yellow....so I was happy to see that's what you went with...looks OUTSTANDING!!! That's a wonderful clearance door.
Blessings,
Linda
My husband would have a fit....2 doors....but I do like the yellow.....I prefer it...but I am sure either would have been beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI have a keeper. My hubby is so easy going with my crazy ideas!!!! I am pretty lucky to have him. Glad he found room in the shed to store the other door. I am so glad I found the clearance door at Home Depot to play with each summer!!!! Have a great start to your week.
DeleteKris
Oh my!!! NOT reading this... not READING this!!!! Too many ideas running a muck!
ReplyDeleteFirstly, LUV the yellow front door. 2ndly, whatdoyoumeanicanhave2doors?! Now how come I have never thought of that? How do I sell this to the Mr?.....

DeleteWhen I found that door in the clearance and it was the right size and swing I was so excited!!!!! I never get excited in the Home Depot but this time I did!!!! Now I have a door I can play with in the summer. It hung pretty easy too so that made it a better sell for the hubby. I am lucky to have him he is pretty laid back with my wild ideas!!!!!
Kris
YOU and Hubby NEVER STOP!*!*!

I am not a real fan of yellow but your door with the teal wreath is perfect!! Love the fact that you can change it out for the winter season and then paint it whatever color you want next summer. Your door and porch looks very inviting! Love it! Nancy
ReplyDeleteLOL, a front door for summer and winter! Great idea! I adore the yellow door with the beautiful wreath in blues! You are so smart! Not sure if my hubby would let me have "2" front doors! Hmm...I could ask!
ReplyDeleteWarmly,
deb
Who would've thought of having a winter and a summer door?
ReplyDeleteYou may be starting a new trend!
BTW, the yellow looks great with the rest of your home.
Kris, that looks amazing! I love the yellow and the way you have the door all fixed up.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteHi Kris,
Like everybody else, I love the yellow door too! So pretty!
XO
~Wendy
Kris- I love the yellow and it is not a bright IN YOAH FACE yellow- it is soft and lovely. What a great idea to have the 2nd door for Spring & Summer. You are SOOOO smart- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI have to say, looking at the paint samples on your wood door, my choice was the YELLOW!! So glad you went with it! What an opportunity to solve your problem finding that clearance door! Like most men, they love WOOD.... or should I say...wood brown?....so what a great compromise! The cottage color angel was looking out for you...hehe! The contrast is striking with the "soft teals" in your garden. Blessings~~~Roxie
ReplyDeleteHi Roxie,
DeleteThanks so much. I was pretty happy with the light yellow. My pictures from my camera do not do this door justice. It is a soft and pretty yellow. I love the cottage vibe it gives the front of my house.
Hope you are having fun with your vintage trailer. Ohhhhh I can't wait to see what you do with that sweetie. Have a great start to your week.
Kris
I love your happy yellow cottage door! We had the original wood door on our last old house and it looked just like yours.
ReplyDeleteI love the yellow, it looks wonderful with the black hardware.
ReplyDeleteI love the yellow door...so pretty and says cottage for sure!!
ReplyDeleteLove the wreath on your door too!
hugs,
Cindy
The yellow door real makes thing pop. Good choice.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you made the right call. The yellow is perfect on your sweet cottage door! What a beautiful welcome for all who visit.
ReplyDeleteI adore your door! Funny story--I was in Home Depot and I was a distance away from a set of display doors. There was a chippy old door and a bunch of new doors...of course I wanted the chippy old door! When I got close I saw there was a sign on the chippy door that said "If your door looks like this you need a new door"--the guy at the store just looked at me weird when I said I want my door to look like that! :) Your new door is such an improvement and the color looks awesome! Your old door didn't look like you--this one does :)
ReplyDeleteWHAT a brilliant idea Kris - absolutely brilliant.
ReplyDeleteJohn would leave me if I asked him to change the door every season, plain and simple LOL
But I think this just may be the smartest idea I've seen yet!
And the yellow is just gorgeous - mellow yellow - my fave!
XOX
Ha Ha Suzan!!!! Tooo bad for Terry he is stuck with me and my crazy!!!!!! So he said it was not too bad to change out the door. It is just a matter of hanging just the door onto the old frame so he was pretty ok with it. He was rolling his eyes a lot when I talked about doing this but I talked to him while he was watching the Blackhawks going for the Stanley Cup so he was doing one of those ok yeah and not really listening to me so that is when I get a lot of my crazy approved. Timing!!!!! Anyway he actually told me he really likes the new door and how it looked!!!!! So my crazy is wearing off on him!!!!
DeleteHave a great week.
Kris
I love it, Kris! Love the door ~ it does have a lovely cottage look to it. The color is perfect! I love the way it ties in with the yellow flowers in your garden.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! :)
ReplyDeleteYou made a good choice going with the yellow, Kris!! Looks so fresh and cheery. LOVE it!!
ReplyDeleteMary Alice
I love the new front door and color. I am going to HD today to see if I can find that door. Your porch decor is lovely.
ReplyDeleteKris, this is a great solution! The yellow is so pretty, and love the wreath with it! :)

Bellissima la tua porta!!
ReplyDeleteFelice giornata!!
Baci!!
Sabry!!
Morning Kris,
ReplyDeleteThat was a great compromise about the door....cause I could see why your hubby didn't want to paint it, that is a beautiful Oak door, and there
is something about men and wood..........they just do not like to paint it...........lol
Now you have the best of both worlds. You are right either paint would look great, so can see why it was such a hard decision, sometimes
you have to go with your gut........cause I know when I have seen something that just makes my heart sing and I do it.... I am much happier
with it, and I also don't get tired of it either. Always nice to be able to have a different look too that you can change to...........you have a very
sweet hubby to be willing to change that out for you. Our hubbies are so nice to put up with our decorating shenanigans, aren't they?? Mine
is like that too.
Your front door looks nice and springy and your wreath looks so nice hanging on it too. Also looks nice with some of the yellow flowers in your planters there...................
Actually, I love yellow, it is one of my fav colors and had much yellow in my house for years, and have been thinking about painting my family room a butter cream yellow for awhile, but haven't made up my mind yet, cause it would match my draperies right now, as
they are floral and have a number of colors, but I want to change them out, but just haven't found anything I like yet.............so am waiting! and I have yellow in my bedroom too.
Hope you Enjoy it..................
Have a Sunny day!
Blessings, Nellie
First off, let me say I am a neutrals kind of girl....especially on the exterior ...tones of browns, grays, and bieges on the outside of my house. Saw a gorgeous green door on a similar house on HGTV's Curb Appeal.Of course I had to try it. I was sure it would look great with all my flowers. Sadly,it was just too much. Just not my soft background. Back to neutral it went.
ReplyDeleteYour door looks great....I was rooting for the yellow.
I'm going to file this post away....just in case ;)
I love Behr paint...the best. Do you get Floetrol at Home Depot?
I agree I actually saw a really cute pink door that looked really cute but knew in my heart that would be way over the top. I have always loved and wanted a yellow door so I am glad I did it. It goes ok with my trim and the brick. I wanted it to be the focal point to the curb appeal so I knew I would have to go away from the neutrals to get that. I am glad I did. I am loving the door.
DeleteYes you get the floetrol at Home Depot.
Have a great week.
Kris
Kris- It is just beautiful! The butter yellow is so lovely - and the new hardware pops beautifully!
ReplyDeleteOh, it does look lovely. While reading your post, I was thinking in my head "No, Not the Yellow!". But as soon as I saw the photo, I fell head over heals in love for it. You made the right choice. I also love the window panes in the new door. Really cute.
ReplyDelete*Smiles*
your choice is perfect Kris!! I've never heard of the floetrol, thanks so much for the tip. I have been frustrated with brush strokes in paint for years. Also love the style of your new front door. It looks maaavelous daaaling!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Edie Marie
Perfect choice Kris! Love the yellow!!ANd the style of the door is great! Thanks for the tip on the floetrol, I've been frustrated with brush marks for YEARS.
ReplyDeleteHave a grand week on your new front porch! (it's gotta feel like it's all new)
Big hugs, Edie Marie
Oh, Kris, it looks so sweet and perfect. My next door neighbors have a blue house with white trim and a yellow Dutch door. A friend just painted her cottage yellow with the teal trim so she used both your colors.
ReplyDeleteI think I need to put a basket of flowers on my front door.
I think that you made the perfect choice! I love the yellow and it goes beautifully with the trim color! It also adds just the right amount of contrast to the blue items. I think that the teal would have taken away from them. Neat idea too, of having two doors so you can switch them out when you want! Very clever! Of course, your husband may think you're nutty but as long as he goes along with it, I guess it's ok LOL! He is very sweet to support your passion! Whatta guy! Have a great day! Hugs, Leena
ReplyDeleteVery pretty! I love how you decorated your front porch. The wreath on the door is pretty too. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI love it in yellow.
ReplyDeleteI have the same door.
You are lucky that both doors are the same size and fit the same frame. It doesn't always work that way!
The front entrance is so pretty.
ReplyDeletelove the new door and pretty pastel color, kris:) we use floetrol, too--the finished look is so smooth. love the new door hardware, too! enjoy the week!
ReplyDeleteThat's brilliant! Barbara in Mn
ReplyDeleteLove the yellow! I love changing things so having a second door is a fantastic idea! Great thinking!
ReplyDeleteI just love the idea of interchangeable doors. I have to go tell hubs! Love the yellow, too!
ReplyDeleteLike your door and all your different gardens. Your petunias are gorgeous!! My goodness. You have lots of good ideas for your garden. I just picked up an old red wagon wheel for $20 and added it to my fountain garden. It sure is fun to make different gardens.

ReplyDeleteKris, sorry for getting back to you so late, but with the move, via my bog, and my MS I needed a bit of a breather and I am just BEGINNING to catch up! Love this door and the yellow is so pretty. You did come up with a great solution. Your front garden by the porch is just stunning, loving those rain boots with the flowers.
ReplyDeleteCynthia
Love your new door. The yellow is gorgeous. It really makes those yellow flowers pop, doesn't it? Ingenious idea - summer door and winter door!!
ReplyDeleteJudy
I definitely like the yellow. Funny how people's opinion was 50/50 in the colour choice. : )
ReplyDeleteOMG!!! That door changes the entire look of your entry!!! I LOVE IT! The blue & yellow together just POP! Great choice. I found you over at Common Ground & thought your hair cut was darling. So, I clicked to visit & found this treat. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYour yellow door is gorgeous! I love your window boxes, too. Very pretty!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post. As I read it, I was rooting for the yellow door! How clever were you to think of having two doors! I even think the door designs go with the seasons. The yellow one with the little square windows is definitely cottagie and summery, and the other one seems somehow more solid for a warm winter look. Brilliant. Always follow your gut; it's smart!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations...your Home beautiful!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's so pretty! Do you mind sharing what specific yellow you used?
ReplyDeleteThe paint is exterior paint with primer from Behr and I believe the color was Pale Lemon. I looked on the can and they did not put the actual name of the color. Sorry but I kind of remember it being called Pale Lemon. Hope that helps.
DeleteKris
Thanks so much; I'm seriously considering the same color for my door!
DeleteKris:
DeleteI love the yellow color. I went to Home Depot and they don't have that color name. They said the can has a barcode on it. Can you perhaps send me a photo of the top of the paint can? If you still have it. If not, no worries. I appreciate your help. I want to try and match your exact color.
-Jess
Hi Jessica,
DeleteSorry but I left that can of paint with the new owners of the house. We sold that house and have moved into a new cottage so I do not have the can to give you the bar code. I am sure you can find a pretty light yellow in the Behr colors. It was called Pale something lol. SO maybe see if they have any colors that start with pale in the color name for yellows. Hope you find what you need. Sorry I do not have the bar code for you.
Kris
Kris,
DeleteThank you for getting back. No worries. I think they had a pale name. I will go back to Home Depot. The siding of our house is the same color as yours in the photo and I love it next to the pale yellow. Love the cottage look! :-)
-Jess
Love the yellow door. Is your door still yelow?
