Kitchen changes and fun with chalk paint.

When my husband came home the other day from work I told him I wanted to take down a cabinet or two!!!! I got the look!!! Then being the nice guy he is and how he loves to use tools he took down a couple of upper cabinets in my kitchen for me.

A little bit of primer on the wall where the cabinet was.

Then repainted the wall.

My husband made me two new shelves to replace the cabinets.

I wanted to keep the corner cabinet but it needed a little something.

So I painter's taped off the center of the cabinet.

I used some chalk paint about 3 coats and I think it was just the bling the cabinet door needed.

I found this great Cloverfield Dairy sign at TJ Maxx and that cutie was in my cart in no time!!! I then added my every day dishes from the cabinet and a few decorative pieces to the shelves.

Sorry my pictures are not the greatest.  It is hard on a cloudy deary day to get good lighting in my kitchen plus I can only do so much with my little Cannon Sure Shot camera.

I have had this old black vintage kitchen scale for some time and never had a place in my kitchen for it.  Now I feel like it fits in with the little bit of black above on the shelves.

Added my vintage apron I got at Junk Bonanza.

Added an old tin roof birdhouse I got in Morris and added the birds to the little wreaths and then hung this on my old garden fencing above on the soffits.

Terrible picture of the pretty chandelier I got at the thrift shop. It really is pretty.

I had some little saucers that were missing their coffee cups so I painted the circles in chalk board paint and numbered them with chalk to hang above the sink on the garden fencing.

Loved that I could reuse these some how since I was missing the cups.

I think by losing some of the upper cabinets and using open shelving it opens up my kitchen and it seems brighter.  I had this chippy white cabinet and hung that next to the shelves.  It is made out of old chippy windows and doors.  I love this cabinet and have had it for a long time.  It has traveled around my house to several rooms and now it is taking up residence in the kitchen.

I love having the shelves now it just feels bigger and more open in my kitchen.

My counter chairs needed a little bling added to them too.  I just took some burlap and a hot glue gun to the back of the chairs.

I recovered the chair seats with some old Ralph Lauren gingham sheets I had.  Easy Peasy with the staple gun.

So far I am liking how the Kitchen is coming out. I apologize for the not so great pictures in this kitchen.  With the way the light comes in the room is so hard to get a good picture.  It is amazing with just a few changes how different the feel is in my kitchen.  Thanks for coming by. I love your comments and input.  Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Have A Great Week.
Kris

  1. Kris, I adore your make over !!! Nice of your husband to help you get your project moving. I love your chippy little wire fencing. The chalkboard paint on the cabinet door just gave me an idea. I have an old fashioned ironing board cabinet where the board folds into the wall. I could paint it to make a nice chalk board. xoxo,Susie

Take my word they are really pretty and soft lighting for the kitchen. Hope you have a great week.

And I can't believe that the Mister comes home and just removes a cupboard or 2 - can you imagine the conversations going on in THIS house if I casually asked John that LMHO???
Are those original cupboards ( because of the backplates against the handles - what a beautiful touch )

  4. Kris,
What you've done is absolutely adorable! Question...it looks as though there are lights under each shelf, is that right? I can see the canister lights at the top, but it doesn't look like the shelves are glass...is that trick photography or are those lights?
    Have a great week!

    1. Hi Rita,
They are what I call puck lights they are small round lights that come two to three on a string. They are fairly easy to install under the shelves and cabinets. They give off a soft light. I am so sorry my pictures could not show how soft and pretty the lights really are in the kitchen. I love those lights. They really highlight things nicely and give off a nice soft light in the kitchen. I found these at Home Depot but I know you can find them just about anywhere. I have even seen them at Walmart. Hope that helps if you are thinking about lights like these. Thanks so much Rita for your sweet comments and taking time to come by. I appreciate it very much. Have a great week.

    1. Hi Chris,
I love the open shelves too. It just gives a more open feel and brightness to the kitchen. You cannot see in the pictures but across the kitchen where my stove and refrigerator are I have two huge pantry's so I did not need all the cabinets so this allowed me to make the open shelves since I had other storage. I know most people want more cabinets not less!!!! But I was lucky when we remodeled we got the extra pantries for storage. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and leave a comment much appreciated. Have a great week.

  6. I love the look, Kris! Those shelves look great. What a nice hubby you have. : ) That sign is perfect; love that, too. I also really like the lights you put in. Can I ask what kind you used. I've been wanting lights under our upper cabinets for awhile now and have hesitated over what kind to get. These look like they give off a nice amount of light.

    1. Hi Kathy,
I got these lights at Home Depot. I call them puck lights because they are small round lights that are attached on a cord. These give off a very soft and warm light. Sorry my pictures could not show how nice the lighting is!!!!! I have even seen these at Walmart and Target. Hope that helps. You can dim these too which is nice. I have always used these lights under cabinets etc. and they work perfectly.

I got this at my TJMAXX/HomeGoods store that is a combo store. Do you have those by you? It is a bigger store and I find the best stuff there. If you cannot find it let me know and I will keep an eye out here for you. It was so sweet how I was just coming into the store and they had a display up front of primitive stuff and there was this dairy sign. I have seen this sign in some catalogs I get for big bucks and I only paid $39.99 for it at TJ/Homegoods. It is always hit or miss but I have seen duplicate things sometimes so I hope you can find this. I have never seen a white horse but I am sure that will come in there too. Anything you see in these catalogs seem to find there way eventually at TJMaxx and HomeGoods or Marshalls.

Thanks for your sweet comments. Hope you are having a great week.

  71. Your kitchen is simply adorable. I don't think I could give up the space from a cabinet unless I had a huge pantry, but this is just the bomb!

    1. Hi Terry,
I have two large pantry cabinets across the kitchen by my stove and refrigerator so that allowed me to lose those two cabinets. I love the openness it gives my kitchen now.
