I have a few new projects going since I did the kitchen redo.
One is the dining room and the other some redo's in the living room. They are not as big as the Kitchen but seem to be taking longer!!
Any whoooooo!
Here is a peak at one thing I am working on this week in the dining room.
This was my farmhouse table which was ok but the stain was a little to orange in color for me. |
You can see how orange the stain was on the table in this picture. |
This is it down to the bare wood after sanding. |
So now the question is to stain or paint. I am leaning towards staining it but not sure yet. What do you think? I am off today to Home Depot to look at stain samples. Hope your week is starting out great. Kris :) |
Tough decision...hmmm I do like the black and white look and I do like darker stained...hmmmm LOL!
ReplyDeleteYou'll just KNOW!
(weather, ugh!!!)
warmly,
deb
Oh I would definitely stain it, it would be stunning and give the room just a touch of contrast. I would love for you to link up to Inspire Me this afternoon. http://www.astrollthrulife.net. Hope to see you there. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteI am thinking stain.... I understand when things just don't seem to fit...you just gotta start over... I know you will get it right.. by the way.. I love the three chandeliers over the table... love that idea! Have fun restaining or painting.. Post pics...we have ice and snow again too and more on the way here in Ky! Long Winter... I am just trying to enjoy and get things done inside.. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteHow dark are you going to stain it?
ReplyDeleteI do like my darker wood against white legs on my table, but for your house, I don't think the top should be too dark.
I can't wait to see the finished product.
We got some rain, actually mostly drizzle. 8 counties in California will be out of water in 2 weeks if we don't get some rain.
Kris,
ReplyDeleteFor your table top you can always do a pickled effect with the outcome like a stain with a hint of color. I'll email you a photo of a armoire I've done.
In Philadelphia we woke to a very heavy snowstorm falling an inch an hour. YIKES, hurry spring, please!
You and your husband are the hardest working couple and your home is gorgeous.
XO,
Vera
I like the contrast of stain, especially since you have mostly whites in the dining room. But you need to go with the look that YOU love.
ReplyDeleteMary Alice
Well, ours was the same way so we sanded it with the intent to whitewash, but guess what? We have left it the bare, blonde wood for two years now. We recently gave it another light re-sand because had a wine stain on it! We use this table daily. We are ordering some Miss Mustard Seed wax to protect it...the clear and white. We will try both and see which one we like best. Our farmhouse table surface is much thicker than yours and hubby says if we leave it raw, we could re-sand every year and it would last our lifetime.
ReplyDeleteBTW are your white chandeliers from Lowes? We just found one that we are going to get, and yours sure look similar to it!
ReplyDeleteNice choice to lighten up the stain...I actually love the color that it is in it's current state. It's just the perfect contrast!
ReplyDeleteJP
Kris I think I would stain it but not to dark. You need a little contrast - the dining room looks so pretty. So sorry you are having such terrible weather. We got a tiny bit of rain last night and more to come Thursday - we'll see. They never get it right.
ReplyDeleteStay warm and try and have a good week even though it's miserable there.
Mary
I vote for stain! I think the contrast to the chairs would be beautiful!! Stay warm. We had 4 inches of snow yesterday and expecting more all this week.
ReplyDeleteJudy
Beautiful dinning room...If it were my dinning room and table I would go with a Dark Walnut color stain on the table top. I'm sure you will make the right decision for your space :) Stay warm and safe!
ReplyDeleteWhat a big difference after sanding! I would lean toward staining, for a bit of warmth against the other painted pieces. Can't wait to see the 'after' : )
ReplyDeleteJeanette
Okay- Well, you asked. I actually like the way it looks now---if you wanted to just polyurethane it with clear OR I like the idea of a dark (almost ebony) finish. IF you stain it and hate it you can always paint it again (and I know you would!;>) LOVE your dining room, Kris. LOVE it! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI vote for staining...I think a little warmth of the stained wood against the lighter legs would be very pretty! Can't wait to see the finished product! Also love your chandeliers!:)
ReplyDeleteKris, it already looks better! As others have said, I love the look of the wood contrasting with the white. But I know whatever you choose it will look fantastic! :)
ReplyDeleteSusan
I think you can't go wrong either way, Kris, but I could see a dark stain on here looking great. I'm looking forward to seeing what you decide!
ReplyDeleteI like it as is, but I'm sure it will beautiful. You will have to consider the floor. I can't tell the colors in the wood floor from the photo. Perhaps a gray chalk paint top or a clear stain that picks up a less dominant color in the floor.
ReplyDeleteKris, I just told my husband that I want to paint our table top, this summer. Can't wait to see your finished table. Stay warm, I am so very tired of our weather too....and more on the way, yuck. xoxo,Susie
ReplyDeleteI would probably white wash it and then wax. I really like it just like it is. While you guys are tolerating the snow. We are having to tolerate this humid, warm, drizzly weather. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteOh..i' m looking forward to seeing what you decide. Whatever you choose it' ll be gorgeous!

Oh Kris, I love it just the way it is. Maybe just a clear stain. My dining room table top is stained to dark for my liking anymore and I'm wanting to sand it down to the bare wood underneath. Now to only find the time, not to mention some weather that is a bit warmer so I can take it outside so there isn't a tone of dust everywhere:-)

Kathleen
Why that's a hard decision! But I know you will make the right one when the time comes.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what you pick!!
Gosh, I might suggest stain just because you did so much work sanding it down to the original finish. Either stain or paint would work nicely though. I would probably go with the one that has the best color choice.
ReplyDeleteI like it kinda of white washed.it will look beautiful whatever you do-love dee x
ReplyDeleteI suggest clear coat or whitewashed then sealed. Blessings, Jenny
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see what you do.....I'm guessing you will stain it first and then paint it later... ;)
ReplyDeleteI think a gray toned stain would look nice on your table, but I know you'll probably be done with it before I publish this comment!! I can't wait to see it finished!
ReplyDeleteI love stain but not sure of color. You probably want to be careful to not be to matchy matchy with your beautiful wood floors! Whatever you choose, I'm sure it will be Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWell you know I'm going to say a darker stain, right ? Just for the contrast - but really my heart says to paint it :)
ReplyDeleteXOXO
Hey Kris, On this situation, I would lean to stain. I think it would be a nice contrast to the white. I'm glad you are showing this...sanding the table. I too, have a BIG problem with "orangey" knotty pine room. Hubby is crying over the fact I want to paint it...trying to come up with a middle ground solution. He isn't crazy over the old orangey stain either so he says "wonder if we could sand the pine down and soften the wood tone"?? Of course, a table is much less than 4 walls....I am curious how this turns out for you....it could be a help to me. Blessings~~~Roxie
ReplyDeleteI vote for clear wax
ReplyDeleteJust sanding it made a huge difference. I vote for stain, I've seen a lot of tables with white legs and stained tops and they look fabulous. Whatever you do will be awesome, can't wait to see the final outcome.
ReplyDeleteI'd stain it for some warmth/contrast...everything is beautful!
ReplyDeletestain...a bit darker but not too dark. The contrast with the white would be gorgeous xo
ReplyDeleteWhat about a charcoal colored stain but not too dark so you can make sure you show off the beautiful grain in the wood. Something that would give a contrast to your wood floors. Your room is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteJudy
I would use a very pale stain to keep it close to color it is sanded down.
ReplyDeleteI stained mine java and love it! I know what ever you pick it will be beautiful. Where did you get the material for the chairs?
ReplyDeleteI did the same thing to our dining room table. Sanded it when I did do it was a tough job it took days. I stained it Provincial by Minwax. That is my favorite color. Dark but not to dark and very rich looking. I just love everything you do and those chandeliers hanging from that door part is just gorgeous. We had more snow here in NJ yesterday and now an ice storm for tonight into tomorrow. We can't catch a break with the weather for our house. I can't take it anymore, UGH!!!!
ReplyDeleteCynthia
Your hubby is a jewel to do all that work for you! I think I would probably go with the stain but it would look nice either way. I am not too happy about more snow tonight either! Ugh. Nancy
ReplyDeletea white type of stain --I kindof like the color it appears now after sanding in the photo.
ReplyDeletepick what you love best, kris:) i painted my table top a yr ago, and still love it. that room is just gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteStain it definitely . Looks great.
ReplyDeleteOooh, the sanding of the table looks great! I like the lighter color. You may want to stain it light, or white-wash. Gone is that orange - now you make me want to get rid of the orange stain in my floors! :)
ReplyDeleteOoooo it is going to look beautiful Kris! Not liking my orange wood in my house either.Shhhhhhhh I would love to paint my wood floors but I don't think that is going to happen.Hope you are staying warm, more snow is coming :-(

Anne
I vote stain…I think it would be a beautiful contrast to the white…love your dining room! Stay warm!
ReplyDeleteSuch pretty room!! I've never noticed the narrow door on the ceiling with the chandeliers before...LOVE!! I really like the contrast with the light wood on white...is there such thing as a "clear" stain? I think that's what we used on our table top...or maybe a matte poly?? It was so long ago, I can't remember...but I still love it :)
