I have a few new projects going since I did the kitchen redo.
One is the dining room and the other some redo's in the living room. They are not as big as the Kitchen but seem to be taking longer!!

Here is a peak at one thing I am working on this week in the dining room.

| This was my farmhouse table which was ok but the stain was a little to orange in color for me. |

| So now the question is to stain or paint. I am leaning towards staining it but not sure yet. What do you think? I am off today to Home Depot to look at stain samples. Hope your week is starting out great. Kris :) |

Tough decision...hmmm I do like the black and white look and I do like darker stained...hmmmm LOL!

ReplyDeleteI am thinking stain.... I understand when things just don't seem to fit...you just gotta start over... I know you will get it right.. by the way.. I love the three chandeliers over the table... love that idea! Have fun restaining or painting.. Post pics...we have ice and snow again too and more on the way here in Ky! Long Winter... ReplyDeleteI do like my darker wood against white legs on my table, but for your house, I don't think the top should be too dark.
I can't wait to see the finished product.
We got some rain, actually mostly drizzle. 8 counties in California will be out of water in 2 weeks if we don't get some rain.

ReplyDeleteFor your table top you can always do a pickled effect with the outcome like a stain with a hint of color. I'll email you a photo of a armoire I've done.

I like the contrast of stain, especially since you have mostly whites in the dining room. But you need to go with the look that YOU love.

Well, ours was the same way so we sanded it with the intent to whitewash, but guess what? We have left it the bare, blonde wood for two years now. We recently gave it another light re-sand because had a wine stain on it! We use this table daily. We are ordering some Miss Mustard Seed wax to protect it...the clear and white. We will try both and see which one we like best. Our farmhouse table surface is much thicker than yours and hubby says if we leave it raw, we could re-sand every year and it would last our lifetime.

Kris I think I would stain it but not to dark. You need a little contrast - the dining room looks so pretty. So sorry you are having such terrible weather. We got a tiny bit of rain last night and more to come Thursday - we'll see. They never get it right.

Beautiful dinning room...If it were my dinning room and table I would go with a Dark Walnut color stain on the table top. I'm sure you will make the right decision for your space :) Stay warm and safe!

Okay- Well, you asked. I actually like the way it looks now---if you wanted to just polyurethane it with clear OR I like the idea of a dark (almost ebony) finish. IF you stain it and hate it you can always paint it again (and I know you would!;>) LOVE your dining room, Kris. LOVE it! xo Diana

ReplyDeleteI like it as is, but I'm sure it will beautiful. You will have to consider the floor. I can't tell the colors in the wood floor from the photo. Perhaps a gray chalk paint top or a clear stain that picks up a less dominant color in the floor.

Oh Kris, I love it just the way it is. Maybe just a clear stain. My dining room table top is stained to dark for my liking anymore and I'm wanting to sand it down to the bare wood underneath. Now to only find the time, not to mention some weather that is a bit warmer so I can take it outside so there isn't a tone of dust everywhere:-)

Gosh, I might suggest stain just because you did so much work sanding it down to the original finish. Either stain or paint would work nicely though. I would probably go with the one that has the best color choice.

Hey Kris, On this situation, I would lean to stain. I think it would be a nice contrast to the white. I'm glad you are showing this...sanding the table. I too, have a BIG problem with "orangey" knotty pine room. Hubby is crying over the fact I want to paint it...trying to come up with a middle ground solution. He isn't crazy over the old orangey stain either so he says "wonder if we could sand the pine down and soften the wood tone"?? Of course, a table is much less than 4 walls....I am curious how this turns out for you....it could be a help to me. Blessings~~~Roxie

ReplyDeleteJust sanding it made a huge difference. I vote for stain, I've seen a lot of tables with white legs and stained tops and they look fabulous. Whatever you do will be awesome, can't wait to see the final outcome.

ReplyDeleteWhat about a charcoal colored stain but not too dark so you can make sure you show off the beautiful grain in the wood. Something that would give a contrast to your wood floors. Your room is beautiful!

I would use a very pale stain to keep it close to color it is sanded down.

ReplyDeleteI did the same thing to our dining room table. Sanded it when I did do it was a tough job it took days. I stained it Provincial by Minwax. That is my favorite color. Dark but not to dark and very rich looking. I just love everything you do and those chandeliers hanging from that door part is just gorgeous. We had more snow here in NJ yesterday and now an ice storm for tonight into tomorrow. We can't catch a break with the weather for our house. I can't take it anymore, UGH!!!!

ReplyDeleteSuch pretty room!! I've never noticed the narrow door on the ceiling with the chandeliers before...LOVE!! I really like the contrast with the light wood on white...is there such thing as a "clear" stain? I think that's what we used on our table top...or maybe a matte poly?? It was so long ago, I can't remember...but I still love it :)
