To Paint or not to Paint

Happy Monday everyone.  Hope your week is starting out great.  We actually are going to hit 60 here today.  Wooo Hooo that is nice for us here in the midwest.

Ok you know how I made the ottoman out of the two end  dining room chairs.

Reminder here:

Remember these chairs.  I loved them but they did not really go with my french farmhouse decor but I still loved the legs of these chairs.

So I repurposed them into this ottoman.

Ok while I was loving this new look I was missing the curved legs of these chairs that I fell in love with.  Plus I felt the ruffles were too much for the family room.
So............

I have had this old farm table out in the garden for the past few summers by my hubby's shed.  It was starting to see the end of it's life with all the watering and weathering.

So I decided to repurpose the legs from that table in my dining room with this old chippy door for a side bar.
You can see this post here.
I did not have the heart to throw out the top of the table from being outside.  I knew it would not make it another summer with the weather and watering but I just could not bear to throw this chippy piece away.
That is when I asked my husband to see if it would fit on top of the ottoman legs and it did!

Here is where I need some advice.  I love the top all weathered but it is in pretty bad shape.  So I am thinking about white washing it or even painting it white and distressing it to match the base.  Just not sure what to do.

In some places it is in pretty bad shape with all the watering and weather that it has been exposed too.
What do you think.  Leave it alone or paint it white.  Remember this is the girl that likes to paint everything white! LOL!
I am torn because I like the distressed weathered look but I also do not like how dark it is in some spots so maybe painting would be better.
We did sand this down as much as we could and it still was pretty dark with the water seeping through the wood for so long outside.

Opinion's welcome.  Would love to hear what you think I should do.
Have a great start to the week.
Kris

  1. I like it just how it is with no paint.

  2. I am afraid if you paint it you might be disappointed, Kris. I kind of like that rustic look and if you paint it how will you like the deep grooves and digs look in the top as they fill with paint? OR---how about painting it and then wiping it all off so that ONLY those old grooves and yucky looking places are filled with the paint and the rest retains that rustic look. Heck, I don't know, Kris. Maybe you should just spend the day cozy-ing up with The Hunk! lol xo Diana ps. That was a wonderful comment he made on my blog!

  3. Try some Howard's Feed-n-Wax. You can get it at Home Depot or Amazon. It will moisturize the wood and make it look gorgeous. I use it on all my wood furniture - wouldn't dream of using anything else. If you still don't like it then you could always try painting the top. You'll be surprised at how the top will look with some Howard's on it. Good luck.

    1. Thank you Gayl I might try that. I really do like the rustic top but the black which does not show up too well in the pictures is what is having me wanting to paint it. I have sanded it and sanded it and with it being out in the elements for so long it really has the black running through the wood. I will try the feed -n- wax to see if that will work. Just afraid that black is through the whole wood. I am willing to try this. Thanks

    2. I like Gayl's input, Kris. If you try it, let us know how it does. I really like it with the wood, but knowing you, you won't be happy if there's too much dark showing through. Either way, you & Terry hit another home run.

  4. I do believe you are the Queen of Repurposing, Kris! I actually love the weathered look of the top. How about just painting the side of the table so that they don't look quite as chippy? Hope your hubby is feeling much better. Oh, I do love that adorable vintage firetruck used as a planter! How fun!

  5. Hmmm, I think if you painted the top Kris, you would loose what you luv about the piece. I say leave it as is. Then, if you absolutely don't like it... you always have the option of painting.

  6. I understand what you're saying about the dark areas Kris. I think the picture might be coming across better on screen than it is in real life. I love the rustic look for the most part but if in person it doesn't look so great then I would white wash it. Putting that top on the chair legs was genius!

  7. Ooooooooo, I love it. I love the look of weathered wood with a touch of white or gray wash. Paint on ~ and quickly wipe off.
It will be great whatever you decide ~ hope you'll show us the results!

  8. I LOVE the distressed wood being left as is. It provides a wonderful contrast with your whites. I like the idea of pairing the primitive with your curvy legs. I think your mind is constantly racing with new decorating ideas, Kris!! :-)) You're so fun!

  10. I love the weathered look with the white. I know we can't see the "real" thing but in the picture but it's a gorgeous contrast. If you can't live with it, I agree with Lin.....white/gray wash it minimally where you see some of the rustic-ness with the paint. If that doesn't work, you can sand it or put more coats of paint. I personally vote keep it.......add some linen or lace to soften the "darker" spots too. blessings~~~Roxie

  11. I love how it looks now and what a great re-do story! That's how the artistic and creative mind works...keep going until you love it and it feels just like you! I think it would look beautiful either way. Gorgeous!

  12. Kris, everything is beautiful! I am in love with those slipcovered stools! I have to say I would totally keep the wood as is! I'm sure it would be pretty white washed but the original is unique and gorgeous! There are so many people who try in vain just to get that weathered look. It's a keeper in my book!

  13. I love that ottoman . How's the hubby. I wouldn't paint the table. It has character that way. Love the little firetruck used as a planter. Cute.

  14. I usually love painting everything, but in this case you can't fake that kind of natural weathering. It is gorgeous and I would probably leave it. My best advice is to live with it for a little while to see if you continue to love it the way it is. The door with the table legs looks fabulous too.

  15. I would try Howard's and if you don't like it you can then paint it. I like the weathered look, but I know how much you love the chippy look. If you don't like it you can always change it.
So glad that Terry is doing s well - thank God. You guys make a delightful couple and so much in love. Take good care of that hunk, you have a keeper.

  19. I like it just the way it is, all weathered and aged to perfection! No matter what you do with it, I'm sure it will look fantastic, Kris.

  20. Now that was a true metamorphosis!
I do love it as it is,so I can't offer any advice.
know you'll figure out something, Kris.

  21. Kris,
I love the weathered history of the top ... That said I hear your uncertainty with the black marking running through the wood from water damage. I kind of feel you will wind up giving it a light white washed/pickled finish and being tickled pink with it. I always enjoy sharing in your thought process and always am impressed with the finished creation.
    Happy creating.

    Vera

  22. Kris, are you cracking the whip on Terry again already? Ha! ;)
I LOVE the little table, and I love the contrast of the wood...but if you decide to paint it, it will look fantastic, too!

  23. Well, I would probably add a little poly or wax just to freshen up / protect the top but not paint it! However, I'm sure it will be gorgeous no matter what you do with it! Blessings, Cindy

  24. Kris...I love the way it is, but if you want to paint it...I agree with those that say to put a white wash or gray wash on it. However...I know that whatever you decide...it will be beautiful!!

  25. You are so talented to mix things together to create something new! I was thinking maybe you could bleach the wood. There is actually a wood bleach you can buy to lighten it up! You might be able to lighten it up to the whitish grayish color of driftwood! Just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love the legs on the table that way and the top of the old table on the legs. I think I would like it whitish. I just read about your husband being in the hospital. I hope he is doing much better now. What an ordeal to have to go through. Need to catch up on my blog reading! Nancy

  27. I think Milk paint might be a good option for this one :)

  28. That looks so cute together, Kris! I really like it the way it is now, but it would look great painted, too.

  29. Hi Kris, I think it has great character and would leave it like it is. I have the feeling though that you'll paint it anyway, lol.
    Have a wonderful week :).

  30. Oh...so lovely the firetruck ! I agree with many others comments. I'd leave it like it is.

  31. first, this marriage of two great pieces is just fabulous! second, i'm like you and paint everything, but, that weathered top is amazing. if it jars your eye too much, paint it. but, i'd have a hard time painting it...

  33. You are a genius...love it!! Of course you probably know that I love the top "as is"...I would just put a clear coat of poly on it to seal it :)

  34. Wow, wow, wow!!! You are just the most creative, that's why I love to follow you. I LOVE it with the contrasting top, all rustic and worn...I hope you keep it that way!

  35. Oh my goodness...I love how you re purposed those legs on both tables!!! Great idea to get two looks that way Kris! I love the table top natural like you have it (I know, me who paints everything white). I'd maybe sand it down a bit and then use a rub on clear stain to seal it or even white wash it a bit but still let the grain and planks stand out. But I know whatever you decide to do, we'll all love it just as much!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Whatever you touch turns to gold, but if it was me, I would live with the weathered wood for at least a few weeks. That would tell me whether I would want to keep it or want to paint it.

Either way, I know you will decorate it beautifully.

  37. I would so totally leave the top as is. It is a gorgeous contrast to all the white. I love the white but think that white rooms need a surprise of unwhite. That weathered look is the perfrct surprise. Just a simple waxing with Annie Sloan clear wax would be the best finish for it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I like the idea of clear waxing it first. And then if you don't love it, white wash. I agree that the dings and grooves would fill with paint and not look the way you want. Been there and done that. I love it the way it is. Black marks and all. All that history from your garden. A special piece of furniture for sure.

  39. The table looks so cute as is, Kris....you could do the wash like suggested, and wipe some off, and just leave the paint where you want it. I know whatever you choose to do, it's going to look great!

  41. You're going to be stunned by what I'm about to say - but I WOULDN'T PAINT IT ( me, who paints absolutely everything lol )
I love it exactly how it is Kris - so pretty!
Guess Terry's doing better? ( boy you don't let him off the hook, do you LMHO !!! )
    Much love,

  42. What a gorrrrrgeous table. I'm so jealous. I'm totally on the same page as Suzan and Holly. I wouldn't paint it. This table has so much amazing character as it is. Of course, if you saw my $2 stool post, you know I like the weathered look. LOL At least a little of it in my home. But it's your table and you have to love it. Whatever you do, it will be great. As always. Hugs, Nancy

  43. Kris, I missed this post but was anxious to hear what others said, to see if they felt the same way I did when I first saw it. THEY DID!! I love the wear and tear it has on it. The wood has so much character. And the marriage with the legs is magical. You are so clever. Glad to hear hubby must be feeling better and is back to work!!..Happy Wednesday..Judy

  44. I vote keep it as is, too. :) Except for a little clear protection...
Love the contrast with your pretty whites!

  45. I love it just as it is, painting might be a little too matchy matchy.
It's the perfect blend of shabby and chic.

  46. Kris, I love the rustic look of It! I say live with it for a while. You can always paint it down the road, but there's no going back to that once you've painted it. I know you love white and I think eventually it will have to be painted to make you happy. But it is such a treasure! Love how the legs are the star now!
    hugs,

  47. You two are just so creative, you just blow my mind with all your repurposing, I LOVE IT! I love the rustic look of it and I would leave it, but I know that you are the paint/white gal and I think you should do what feels right for you...after all look at how that's worked for you up to now!!! BEAUTIFUL!!

  48. I love it not painted...can you use some type of oil to bring some of the wood back to life...however, I love the worn look...gives it such character!!! You are too creative Kris!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I just found your blog & absolutely love it!!! You have a great eye!!! I love the rustic weathered look of the table top as is, but as a compromise between a full paint job and leaving it as is, you can dry brush it. That will add some white while keeping the dark marks and weathering visible. Its gorgeous as is!!!! And that side table in the dining room with the stools below......so pretty!!!

  50. Well, I've already told you I love this! But, the story behind it--so inspiring! It's amazing what you can do with junk, Kris!
