Finally have the stair case board and batten ready to show. It was fairly easy to do. I got some ideas on Pinterest. I went between framing out the walls and board and batten. We chose the board and batten route with the taller walls.
I also found a company on Etsy that makes vinyl lettering for your walls. "Begin Each Day With A Grateful Heart" is one of my favorite quotes so I had the letters done up for this long wall at the top of the staircase which you will see later in this post.

Staircase Before |
The board and batten closed in the staircase a little bit but I am ok with that because it has a more finished feel now. |
We continued the board and batten around the landing in the upstairs hall. |
For the risers I found this paintable border on the clearance at Lowe's for $5 dollars a roll. It is embossed and I thought it would give the risers some personality! |
It took 3 rolls of border to do the 15 stair risers. Not bad for $15 dollars. |
After we cut each piece we applied wallpaper border paste to the back. Even though these were prepasted borders we felt the paste would hold up better. |
This is the saying I had done up for this wall. The letters look like they were hand painted onto the wall. Easy peasy to hang this saying. |
Now every morning when I head down stairs to start my day I am reminded of this beautiful saying. |
I am happy with the board and batten to fill in these tall walls and love the lettering to make the decor feel simple and easy on the staircase. |
There you have it the stairrisers and stair walls got a little make over. Using MDF boards made this project very inexpensive and easy to do. Now the walls going up the stairs do not feel as tall and boring.
Before the makeover every trip up and down these steps I could feel the staircase and walls saying make us pretty and give us some style!!!!
Hope you have a wonderful rest of this week.
Hugs,
Kris

That looks amazing! Love the wallpaper on the stairs, too. What a sweet look!
ReplyDeleteThis is so beautiful, Kris! The change is wonderful. I love the staircase wallpaper, wow! Now I want to rip the carpet off of my basement stairs!
ReplyDeleteI luv it all. The board and batten, the anaglypta on the risers, the saying on the wall, the window in it's new home!!!
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful. 🙂
Wow, what a difference! I think your staircase walls are saying 'thank you' now.
ReplyDeleteAre your walls a light gray tone, Kris?
love it! I don't think the board and batten closes it in at all. It seemed so unfinished before, once you had refinished the steps and rail. Just curious if you plan to seal the textured paper on the risers at all. I love that type of paper, but have refrained from using in high traffic areas of my home, as I have a somewhat clumsy hubby that constantly gets reminded by me to watch the corners (and honestly the flats) of the wall. I was thinking of using it in our guest bath ceiling as a faux tin. No one ever showers in there so no fear with too much steam. I have heard that using MDF is actually a preferred choice of material for board and batten, as the edges are crisp and paint takes so well for a smooth finish. As always, GREAT JOB and thanx for sharing.
ReplyDeleteBTW, have I told you yet, just how much I love your floors now! They compliment all you bright white and fabulous chippiness perfectly!
ReplyDeleteO-M-G!!!! What an incredible transformation......it looks amazing! I love the quote you added to the wall and the window is just perfect too!
ReplyDelete~Des
I am in awe!
ReplyDeleteWhat a difference the board and batten make. They turn a stock condo into a one of a kind space!
I love the quote on the wall!
Oh wow! How lovely! I've never seen batten before. I guess I need to look at pinterest more. Love the wall with the scrolled print. Incredible job!
ReplyDeleteOoh, I love it!!! The board and batten looks wonderful and I am glad you found the perfect spot for your lovely window!
ReplyDeleteIt came out beautiful. I really love the board and batten. xoxo Su
ReplyDeleteIt turned out fantastic :) and adds a finished feel. I have the dilemma of decorating tall walls and have never quite figured out what to do with all that space.
ReplyDeleteThis is so beautiful. The wording is such a good idea and I will now have to source something that is appropriate to me to begin each day. xxx
ReplyDeleteKris,
ReplyDeleteOMGosh I am in love! You sure did make it pretty and in the process added a real value add to your house. This may be my favorite change to your darling junk chic cottage 2. You and Terry rock as a team. Oh and the quote? How perfect is that ... Not only placement location but message. Love your use of the wallpaper border, best use ever of a border. Enjoy your Labor Day sweet friend, I am completing a blog post I am about to put up. Amazing what a little cut wood can do. Loving it and you.
A wonderful addition to your stairwell....it added design without overpowering or closing it in, in fact it feels so much larger with the added detailing to board and batten.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the oh my goodness. Change is always good right?
Xx

ReplyDeleteHave a great week and yes, I wish we would have know each other then, I traveled to Chicago so many times and stayed there weeks at a time. I am still going to stop in Chicago on my way back from Virginia and maybe over night. As soon as I get this heart problem figured out, I then can make plans. See a cardiologist Dr this week and will know what they are going to do.
Have a great week and hugs to Cooper.
Hugs,
Mary

What color paint did you use? I am starting to fix up an old 2 story house this month. I'm am looking for good whites and grays to use. I love what you did in your new condo. You really put alot of character into a builders grade condo. I love all the things you have done. You are a very talented lady. Sue in Missouri.
ReplyDeleteHi Sue,
DeleteThanks for your visit. The color paint on the walls throughout my house is called Drifting Snow by Behr. It is basically white with a hint of gray. It is very neutral but goes with just about everything. Hope that helps and hope you come back to see this. You are a no reply blogger so I had not way to email you with an answer to your question.
Kris
Thank you so much Kris. This is very helpful. I'm a little overwhelmed when starting to decorate a whole house with paint colors. I like your style and would love to have your talent in decorating. I've been reading your blog for several years now and when you moved into your new condo I was anxious to see what you would do. I love how you made it your own. Thank you for answering my question, now I have a direction to start my projects.
DeleteSue
Fantastically Beautiful!!!!! I love it all, you guys did a magnificent job on that stairway. I have one question Kris.....how in the heck did you reach the high areas??? Was Terry on stilts???? lol please tell.
ReplyDeleteLOL Teresa. He was on a special ladder that is called a Giant. It actually is a ladder that turns into scafolding. He loves that ladder and it has come in handy in this house with high ceilings.

I cannot BELIEVE the difference that made, Kris. WOW- It looks fantastic and you just added a few thousand dollars worth of value to your place if you ever decide to resell. Those kinds of things really add to buyer appeal. Great idea on the steps, too. I have used that border before but never as an application for that. GREAT idea!
