Rescued Door

Good Sunday Morning to all of you.  I was at Habitat Restore looking for an old armoire when I came across this door that was in the clearance area.  They get one week in the clearance bin and then it is out to the trash.  WHAT?!!!!  Something with good bones and history out to the trash.  No way.
The door whisper in me came out and I called Terry over to check out this door.  I got the eye roll and the comment "Where on earth are you thinking of putting that?!!!!"

Yep it was one of these moments!!!!

This picture really does not show it too much but the door was pretty scratch and in bad shape on the one side of the door.  I still was determined she was worth saving.

As you can see the back side of this door looked like someone started to sand it down.  So Terry said he would sand the front so it could take paint.  Shocker I wanted to use White Paint on this old girl!!!!

Terry has this bin in the garage that has all kinds of broken and misfit things in it.  He found these old chippy hinges in the box to attach to this door. Love that he has that bin with cool things in it.

He used a metallic spray paint that gave the hardware a silver grey antique look.
This is how the pantry looked.  Just a stock closet door that I had white washed and antiqued with gray paint and wax awhile back.

This is where I envisioned the new "old" door to go.

Off came the closet bi fold doors.

New pretty "old" door.  Sorry but there is no way to get a good pretty white picture in this corner of my kitchen.  I have to stand in the hall to get the angle of this and there is no natural light.  Plus it has been very cloudy and rain filled days.  Would love to see some sun.  Trust me this door and her new hardware blend in nicely in my kitchen.

Loved rescuing this old vintage door and re loving her in my home.

Have a great start to the new week ahead.
xoxo
Kris

  2. That worked out GREAT for that spot, Kris. Good eye...and I bet it is heavy, too. Ummm...You don't have everything in your pantry color-coded and arranged in alphabetical order? YOU? lol I am such a brat--I know. Terry and you worked your magic again though and it came out looking beautiful. It looks a lot better than the bi-fold doors that were there. This door has substance!! Love your home- you know I do....xo Diana

  7. My grandparent's house built in 1925 bungalow, had these doors. Gorgeous---and what a pity not to use them. I actually have beveled glass, window pane parlor doors, one which we used on a closet. The other is in storage. Your project turned out great! Sandi

  10. Kris,
From builder bi-fold to a vintage door with soul.... love it!!! I so understand the problems our homes can create in capturing a photo to show something in its best light.

  12. Kris i want to thank you for your beautiful visit and taking the time to leave a comment.
As for my return visit to see what you are up to I see you were one fortunate lady to find such a fit, a perfectly old fit to a door jam that required such a unique size. Out with the old, and I'm with the new old! and what a fabulous find. I am looking for that solid old door I could use in my bath room, inspired by our creative Mary Alice, I want to take a tall slender door and mount it on my wall behind the toilet and then mount the towl rack on the door, the toilet is so close to the head of the tub I want my overnight guest to,see something pretty other then the toilet. Then I will layer some of my pieces on the door.
If this inspires you to find another door and do the same, I am sure the white maven over here will most likely get it done before me. It's so inspiring to see your drab door that we once loved, raised to a higher level of major love with the new old door. Bravo for ignoring the eye roll, I know Your hubby is a trooper and its eveident in all the beauty the two of you are creating here.

Hope you find that armoire, and can't wait to see what next.
    Xx
A beautiful week ahead of you my dear and all that it inspires these greyer days.

  20. wish our ReStore store had a clearance section! But honestly, I think that door was meant to be in your home. So much better than the previous bi-fold doors. I am surprised that you got an eye roll...with all the two of you do together in the upcycle category of your home, it is easy to imagine that you always have a willing cohort in you décor endeavors. Absolutely love your style!

  28. Don't you just love it? Oh Kris, if you and I were out together, we'd be putting on the brakes A LOT. You did GREAT on this and imagine, this door FITS!!!!!!!! Give your man a HIGH FIVE for me, he is awesome. Oh my.....such a great fit. Did I ever tell you that I found a CRYSTAL chandelier in the trash one day on my way to work? A BED, A MIRROR, and last summer, I was driving by a salvage warehouse near my home. They had a perfect table IN THE TRASH. I put on my brakes, they squealed, the men on the dock laughed their heads off and said, "TAKE IT!" I did. I painted it gold and applied a bit of white to it. Can't go wrong with free stuff!

    Enjoy my friend.

  29. I love it! One time we found a Marsh glass-front cabinet from the 40s in the Habitat dumpster with the glass still intact! DL jumped in there and handed the pieces to me. We restored it and it found a new home with a cute couple.

  36. Where to start? I'm with you. . . throw that out? Why? If not re-used for a door I could think of all kinds of purposes for it. But I digress. You saved it and it's beautiful! Such a great place to use it, and how cool of your hubby that even though he "rolled his eyes" he still made your vision come true. That's a man who loves his wife! You two keep proving to me what a great match you are. Love the dog photo. Hah! xo

  37. So much better than the bi-fold doors. That was just perfect luck that somebody didn't want that old door anymore! Your husband is a keeper... Most men would just say "You want to do what with that old door??? You're crazy!"

  38. How amazing that you found that door and just the right size for your pantry opening! did you envision that when you saw the door? It's so narrow.. would be hard to find a narrow door like that anywhere, let alone just happening upon it. You are SO LUCKY to have a hubby who can take your visions to the final result.. I would have to do it all myself, and thus... I don't do it or buy it. Hubby and I did happen upon a narrow (plain) door at our local Restore last year, with the hopes that it would fit our narrow master bathroom opening.. and voila it did! but it's still sitting in our garage waiting for white paint for my pink bedroom, plus needs new hinges, etc. Love how you spray painted those hinges! I hope our new little old door gets put up this coming summer. Love the photo of the doggy too! xoxox Marilyn

Thank goodness you came along when you did. Now you just have to keep going back every day. We can't let Terry rest on his laurels, right?
