Hello everyone. Thought I would share a few of the changes we are starting at the new house.
|
Here is our 1950's bathroom in the new house. Love the cast iron tub and glass block window. Gives some character to this bathroom. With all the other reno's and builds the budget is spent so Terry and I are on our own for this bathroom. |
|
I wanted to keep the cast iron tub. It is solid and keeps to the cottage feel of the house along with the glass block window. The tiling in this bathroom well let's just say I am not a fan! |
|
Yeah No!!! The tiles had black streaks and the grout was a mess. |
|
Yep! not so much on this pattern either!!!!! |
|
Since we wanted to keep the tub and not have a major tear out of the tiling this is the solution we came up with to update and save money. |
|
This is epoxy paint that refinishes the surface of tiles and tubs. The cost is about $36 dollars. We used a similar epoxy paint once before. It did a pretty good job to seal and protect and give a new appearance to tiles in our past home. You can tint this to any color. I chose to keep it white. I know shocker I wanted white!!!! |
|
You use a small sponge roller to paint the epoxy paint after cleaning off the surface of the tiles. It is pretty easy to do. |
|
It took two coats of paint. You have to wait an hour in between each coat of paint. Then this paint has to cure on the tiles for 48 hours. As you can see it adheres to the tiles and grout pretty nicely. |
|
The tub came out beautiful. Better than I thought it would. |
|
Now the old dated tiles and tub have a new look. This tub and the tiles for very little money have been updated and I could keep the character and vintage feel to this bathroom.
Now we will add new fixtures. We are painting and adding a new vanity and sink in this bathroom. The old vanity and light fixture was well... Yikes! So that is out and new will be coming in. Stay tuned for the whole bath reveal soon.
I cannot wait to add new paint on the walls and some of my old chippy vintage pieces to this bathroom.
Still waiting on permits to be pulled on the garage build and basement reno. Getting everything the city wants to ok permits has been a real task. Hoping this week to get some of that accomplished. In the meantime we are working on the bathroom and kitchen reno ourselves. Lots of painting of walls going on too! Hope to show you some before an afters soon.
Have a great new week. Hugs, Kris |
I didn't know there was such kind of paint. It worked wonderfully on your bathroom tiles and the tub, Kris. What a great way to get a different look. Good luck with the permits! Hopefully you'll get them soon.

KRIS! Not bad my friend, NOT BAD!!!!!! First of all, you have good bones to work with here. In our cottage, our main bath was layered in plastic PINK tiles. Ruben tore out everything over a period of two years. Now we have a French style limestone shower and we love it.
ReplyDeleteI have come to the conclusion that when we have limited funds, space, resources, our imaginations FIRE UP to high levels. I think this is a great solution and if and when you are able to rebuild your bathroom, you will be so ready, like we were.
I LOVE seeing what you're up to!
Wow, Kris what a difference. Of course you picked white! :)
ReplyDeleteWow! You painted the tub, as well? That came out great! Much cheaper than a tear out! -Jenn
ReplyDeleteGood Morning Kris
ReplyDeleteYour bathroom looks amazing* I didnt' think it looked too bad in the before but of course the after is just fabulous. Love how that inexpensive stuff made your bathroom look like new. Love love love that window
have fun painting :)

Kris, I was amazed at that paint coving so well. I can only imagine the fumes. Did you have to wear masks? I honestly have never heard of this paint. But I can say, I love it ! I am so looking forward to seeing your new cottage that will be your completed home. Blessings sweet friend, xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteWow, that paint looks like the perfect solution, Kris! It already looks like new tile. Love that glass block window too - good call on keeping that and the tub (heck, and the tile, too!). Nice and bright, I love it. Maybe this week will be the week they pull your permits for approval. Fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteYour tile and tub look fantastic, Kris. There are so many amazing products available nowadays. I hope you can get all of your permits soon - that can be a major headache!
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw that first picture my first thought was 'I hope she's keeping that tub!'. Whew! Not only is it well built, but it's pretty deep too. That's one of my pet peeves with some tubs. They're barely deep enough to cover my booty, much less boobies ;), which defeats the purpose imo.
ReplyDeleteExcept for the trim on the tiles, I think everything looked pretty darn good, but now it looks even better. Great bones in that bath Kris!
Hope you get the permits pulled this week. Bureacracy...gotta love it :/.

Woohoo, you're back in the makeover world! I am filing this info away for future use...who knew? So you painted the entire tub? Inside and out? Wonder how well that would stick to fake marble? Your bathroom is off to a great start! Love that window❤️
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Cecilia
OMG you did an amazing job I love it!!

Wow- it's amazing the products that are available like this. I'm sure it already feels much different to go into the room now! I hope the permits come quickly for the garage- such a hassle. The late 1950's house I grew up in still has the original cast iron bathtub and fortunately it's in mint shape. Someday someone will be buying it and likely bust it all out. It is pink but not bright pink- more of a dusty rose pink. Either way that color isn't everyone's first choice! I hope your mom is doing well.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful difference that paint made! I am looking forward to watching you make this house your home.
ReplyDeleteLooks great....what a huge difference!!!! Love that big ole tub too!!!!
ReplyDelete~Des
Brilliant! It looks great! xo
ReplyDeleteSmart, smart idea!! My mother-in-law used something like that in one of her bathrooms and it has lasted for years. Not sure that it was exactly the same product but hers looks great and is durable.
ReplyDeleteYour new cottage is going to be wonderful!!
Kris, your paint job has made such a difference in this room already! A complete tear-out is a complete mess...good choice with the paint. What kind of cleaner do you use on this sort of surface? Can't wait to see what other magic you have in mind for this bathroom.
ReplyDeleteReally like the glass block window, Kris. At first glimpse I didn't think the tiles looked too bad but seeing them painted, definitely fits better into your white cottage style. Looking forward to the room reveal.
ReplyDeletethis looks fabulous, Kris, great job! Our daughter did this in a home reno in St. Louis from a home built in the 30's. the tile work was wonderful, but it was green and tan. ugh. painted it white and it looked like a brand new bath.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about that tile paint, thanks for sharing! It did a wonderful job! Can't wait to see more.
ReplyDeleteHi Kris, Love how your tiles and vintage tub turned out. My son did this to his quest bath and it has been great and lasting beautiful. Your new bath is going to be gorgeous. Can't wait for the reveal!! Have a great week!
ReplyDeletethanks so much on the information about tile and tub painting. I had it all sprayed about 7 years ago. The tiles are fine, but the tub needs to be re-done and they want $500.00 to come and do it. So for $36.00 I will try this myself.
ReplyDeleteI am so excited for you and can hardly contain myself waiting to see the end results. Happy Happy remodeling.
I am sure you and Terry will work your your magic on this bathroom and kitchen.
Hugs
Mary
I think I may try that on my pink bathroom. It's my bath and very small but the pink is driving me crazy however, I'm not in the mood to have the whole bathroom redone yet. Looks great! You two amaze me with how you just jump in and get stuff done so fast. I know it is tiring but you have such gorgeous outcomes. Excited to see the finish and the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteHow is Terry liking his new job?
Have a great week.
Judy
PS. Forgot to mention that I painted my faucet with oil rubbed bronze oil paint about 18 months ago and it has held up great.
ReplyDeleteJust an idea.
Judy
I'm so glad you're keeping that great tub and beautiful window! I love them and what you've done to the tile makes both look even more amazing. I'm really looking forward to the other updates in this bathroom.
ReplyDeleteIt all looks great and I'm surprised you painted it white! (NOT!)..... years ago, probably back in the 90's, my dad painted the tiles in their house bathroom (where I grew up) with regular oil based paint. It held up for YEARS and YEARS! It looked so neat and I was amazed that it worked so well. Was nothing special, just paint but oil based. What you guys did looks amazing.. the "before" picture looked good to me too.. I thought it was the "after" picture! I sure hope those permits come through! I'm sure it's very hard waiting! Hugs... Marilyn
ReplyDeleteFantastic! Did the paint spatter much?? How easy is it to get an even coat? and how long did the smell stick around? I just may choose this option for that ugly orange tile in my bathroom. Love the new look!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome, good for you! I'm so excited to see you working on your new house, and watch it come to life with your amazing style, Kris!
ReplyDeleteBig improvement with that paint! You guys sure know how to change things up!
ReplyDeletedeb
What a great change with your paint job
ReplyDeleteHugs Alessandra
WOW! As always you two are amazing.
ReplyDeleteI like the window in the bathroom as well. This is going to be fun ... can not wait to see what is next.
Carla
Such a perfect solution. I love it.
ReplyDeleteThe bathroom is super charming and your paint job is magical. It looks like a completely new tub and tile job. I have to keep this trick in mind! We have one of those jetted tubs and it is a pain to keep clean. I absolutely hate it. I really want to remove it and put in a basic tub again. I just can't deal with all the mess...too bad they don't make a paint for that!! Ha! ;) Looking forward to more of the reno's...
ReplyDeleteI agree with the choice to keep the cast iron tub. Amazing update for the tile and such a cost effective way to accomplish it. I CAN NOT wait to see the décor going up. I will wait patiently for your next update checking back daily. LOL
ReplyDeleteWow! That epoxy paint is amazing! It looks like a whole new tub and surround! Can't wait to see what else you do in there and in the kitchen! You've done such wonders in your other two homes! I've been eyeballing our mantle. It's hideously ugly and doesn't fit the fireplace, so I'm thinking of ripping it off and painting the bricks before putting up a new mantle. I'll probably get vetoed lol! Am I crazy? Nah! Hugs!

ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the reveal. White is a perfect color and backdrop. I know you will have fun putting your personal touches in your new home.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful solution Kris!...Looks wonderful...question...how does the "finish" hold up to cleaners?
ReplyDeleteKris,
ReplyDeleteLove the transformation....nice job! Can't wait for the reveal.
Kathleen
Smart thinking! This looks brand new...what a huge change for a small cost. I need to show this to my sister in law.
ReplyDeleteSo happy that you are getting things done in your new home. Hope those permits come thru soon.
xoxo, T.
So impressive! Seems there's nothing you two can't do. Everything looks so fresh and new. The bathroom already looks fantastic.
ReplyDeleteMuch improvement and refreshment for little cost... wise choice. Hey Kris how about you send some of your energy my way! We have retained our original cast iron tub and we did gut the entire bathroom and repositioned the tub... what is outstanding is the ability of the cast iron tub to retain the warmth of the bath and John even lined it with installation underneath and water stays warm to well after we are prunes!!!
ReplyDeletexoxo,
Vera
Can't wait, Kris. The tile and tub look brand new and you can't beat the cost...Happy Wednesday..xxoJudy
ReplyDeleteThe tile came out really nice. Good thing you kept it. It's a major renovation to get the tub out, besides it's cast iron, and they hold the heat well. I know, because I have one, and my dad's a plumber. xoxo Su
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. It looks wonderful and so much less expensive than replacing the tiles and tub. xo Laura
ReplyDeleteKris, if anyone can do a redo on a budget, it's you. It really turned out great. Love it!!

ReplyDeleteI love that. We used a similar product for our downstairs bathroom. It was transformed. I love the glass block. I can't wait to see the reveal.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how the white paint changed the light in the room. It looks so much brighter in your after pictures... The magic of white...
ReplyDeleteWow, how nice to find a product that would cover up the ugly tile and grout! Will look forward to seeing the rest of your pictures and your redo. Getting those permits sounds like a real hassle! Hope it all comes together for you quickly!
ReplyDeleteWow what a difference with the product you used in your bathroom! Love it all white!
ReplyDeleteIt turned out great Kris...so fresh looking! I loved seeing all you have done in your yard already, too!
ReplyDeleteKris,
ReplyDeleteI am totally amazed at that transformation! I did not know you could paint on tubs or tiles! The white is so clean and bright and definitely lends itself to that cottage look we love!!! Can't wait to see what else you do...you both do great work! what a team!
Thanks Linda. Yep that epoxy paint is a miracle paint for sure. Love the way it made those worn tiles look brand new.
DeleteHappy Friday.
Hugs,
Kris
