Today I want to show you my charming neighborhood and also share my outdoor fall decor.
The first time I drove down our street I fell in love with the charm of each of the houses in this neighborhood. Each home is unique and no two are a like. These homes were built in the late 40's to early 50's.

| Unfortunately we are seeing some of the charming homes torn down and these bigger modern homes going up in this neighborhood. While they are beautiful homes I feel they take away from the charm of this neighborhood.
This neighborhood reflects a wonderful time in American culture when homes were built to last with families in mind.

| Terry and I are busy working on the inside decor to share soon. It still feels like summer here this week. It was 82 today and 77 tomorrow. Next week we are suppose to drop down in the 60's for our normal fall weather. Have a great weekend. Hugs, Kris |

I almost didn't recognize your home's exterior for the added color! It looks beautiful Kris, and so does your neighborhood. Our neighborhood is morphing similarly.....people buying homes, tearing down and re-building homes that don't necessarily fit the vernacular. Have a great weekend. I emptied containers yesterday...it was really hot, but wanted to get it done before it gets cold...if that ever happens.
ReplyDeleteCharming homes indeed and yours looks great. I was like wow that one is big and then read that it is a new one. We are having the same weather here and the temps are above normal so I know yours are way above normal.
ReplyDeleteYour home looks wonderful and what a gorgeous neighbourhood! My neighbourhood is the same as yours - houses built in the 1920s and 30s (mostly) with huge lots and playparks and trails dotted here and there. Mostly single story houses, too so lots of sunshine getting to the houses and a view as well. On a couple of lots, the original houses have either been expanded hugely or torn down and massive structures put in their place. Sigh. Progress isn't always beautiful... xox
ReplyDeleteYou really do have some charming homes in your neighborhood. Your harvest angel is the cutest - I love how her arms are carrying bunches of flowers. I like the planters and window boxes all falled up. We hit about 75 yesterday and will be in the low to mid 60’s next week. This has been roller coaster fall season!
ReplyDeleteIt's happening here in Austin as well; charming little cottages getting torn down for modern houses or worse, multifamily units. Makes me sad.

Your new home and your new neighborhood are just lovely and very inviting. Give me an older home any day of the week...the new houses just can't match that history and charm. Well, I kinda take that back...there is a builder here in Indianapolis who builds new to look old. The owner of the house I was in had Suzanne Kasler do the decor. ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful homes. I love the character each has. So unlike today when they all look so much alike. I too was like, "wow, someone important must have lived in that home in the 40s". LOL New build.

I'd never noticed the lattice- work on your front porch, it's really perfectly cottage-y. I know you're having so much fun with this stage of the remodel.

ReplyDeleteI love the style of homes in the northeast and midwest. Those are styles that are not common out here. It's too bad they are tearing down. It bugs me that people move to the neighborhood for "charm" and the "trees" and then proceed to wreck it with a monstrosity. Sometimes they are done well, but most of the times they are not. The worse is when the take a huge lot, knock down a beautiful home, and put six or eight houses on it and gate it creating a little future ghetto. xoxo Su

Looks to me like most of those houses in your neighborhood are bigger homes. Don't know if that's the case or not. But I do love the charm of those homes that aren't cookie cutter.

I'll repeat what everyone else here said. Your neighborhood is darling. I grew up in Portland, OR in a neighborhood very similar. I loved it and I miss it. Those older homes of the 40's were just so neat and I had several friends who lived in them so got to visit and play. One friend had a huge house in NE Portland that I thought was a mansion when I was little! We could spend hours playing inside and I would get lost in all the rooms. Must have had at least 8 bedrooms! It was built with style... homes on the same street were smaller and quaint and I loved them all. I'm so glad you found a "cottage neighborhood" there. Where I live now has nothing of the sort, anywhere in town! Darn...... enjoy your Fall decorating.... love your angel on your door and all of your pretty colors in the pots. Hugs.. Marilyn
ReplyDeleteYour neighborhood has so much charm, Kris! It is so reminiscent of the neighborhood my grandparents lived in when I was growing up, with the homes being around the same age. Unlike here, your neighborhood appears to still have pride of ownership and they are well maintained with loads of curb appeal. Sadly here, most of those charming neighborhoods have become dilapidated rentals or torn down for big new homes that look out of place. Thanks for taking me down memory lane with your tour. KRIS! Hello! Your neighborhood is gorgeous! It reminds me a lot of the fairytale style found here in Minnneapolis. We too had warmer than usual weather and it was gorgeous, but the winds of October came and blew away all the colors from the trees. The real October is about to reveal itself soon!

ReplyDeleteYour neighborhood looks a lot like my neighborhood, Kris. Tons of different style cottages, very few look the same. Some have been replaced with larger versions, although the building codes are pretty strict by the beach, so it impedes some of the renovations. And I am happy about that. I like the cottages...yours looks lovely for fall...if it ever decides to arrive. ;) xoxo have a great week!

ReplyDeleteAs for the larger homes going in and tearing down the smaller cottages to do so I totally get how sad this could be.
I know it pushes the comps up for your value, but devalues the smaller quaint living charm.
I LOVE the full hip roof on your cottage and that real brick chimney is welcomed I'm sure.

Your cottage looks so sweet all decorated for fall! I'm with you in that I much prefer the older homes and their quaint charm over the big houses! I grew up in a 50's rambler and loved it! A few years ago, it was turn down and replaced by a "mcmansion". Very sad and it sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the older, smaller homes. Have fun decorating! Hugs!

I think your home belongs in just the right spot! I love your outdoor decor Kris, speaks so much of all the goodness to behold inside too! I too am sad to see the older homes demolished and updated into something sort of 'odd' in a street like yours. I remember that in our first home in Chicago, and truly, the newer and bigger homes they rebuilt on the old ones, do not appeal to me at all, and I think it's because it seems to not go with the flow of the rest of our neighborhood!
