Bit of Sugar

Well we are closed and new owners of this condo.  I have to be honest and let you know that I cried when I had to close the door on our sweet cottage home on Friday.  I will miss that sweet home.

On to better adventures in life.

I let the kiddo's do a little graffiti on the wallpaper walls in the dining room before we started the shiplap.  Good bye wallpaper hello a bit of sugar color and some shiplap over the wallpaper.

I have to tell you I was worried about these really dark burgundy walls and how many coats of paint it was going to take to cover with my Behr color Bit of Sugar I picked out.

I have always loved Behr paint but I was really impressed with how well the white Bit of Sugar came out in only two coats over that dark burgundy.  I did not use any primer the primer is in the paint already.  We wanted a 5 gallon size and I normally get Behr's high end Marquee paint but Home Depot did not have it in the 5 gallon size so we went with their lower end paint with primer and I have to say I was quite impressed with the coverage.

It covered the dark burgundy walls really well.  As you can see the carpet is all torn out and ready for new wood floors.  Made painting so much easier too.  No worries if you drip a little here and there.

That graffiti wall of wallpaper is now covered in shiplap.  It was fun to try shiplap.  It was really quite easy to hang.  The shiplap needs a coat of the bit of sugar.  It is just primed in the picture.  Bit of Sugar is one of the top three white paint colors that is perfect for shiplap.  We got our shiplap at Home Depot.  We did MDF shiplap a lot less expensive and it is primed and ready to paint.

The bathroom was recently renovated but I did not like the olive green color on the walls so they also got the Bit of Sugar color.

The old appliances are moving out and new ones coming in this week after the floors go in.  I wanted to take down all the upper cabinets and have shiplap on these walls and open shelves.  We ran into some snags like the cabinets are not stock or normal sizes.  So to replace these cabinets on the bottom would cost us a small fortune so we decided to make them work with a fresh coat of paint and new hardware.  Where the refrigerator is out in the right corner of the pictures a new drawer cabinet will be inserted and the new microwave hung under the smaller cabinets.  As you can see there is no drawers to speak of in this kitchen.  I need drawers for my silverware and utensils so a new cabinet will be put in the place of the refrigerator.  The refrig is being relocated to another place in the kitchen and a pantry added.

Right now the old double oven and old refrigerator are sitting in my living room.  They will be picked up and given to Goodwill.  I have to say I was sad to say goodbye to the double oven sitting in this picture.  It is 25 years old but the seller never used it but twice in the 25 years she owned this condo.  She never cooked in an oven or on the stove.  Not sure how that worked out for her but this old vintage double oven is in perfect condition.  It would be so fun for someone with a lake home that wants the vintage look.  Hope both the old refrigerator and stove will help someone out.  The dishwasher was not working so that is being tossed and she never had a microwave!  So our kitchen will be getting all new appliances.

Since we decided to paint the cabinets we decided to use a paint sprayer.  OMG it is the best thing ever.  The paint went on smooth and even and it shaved a lot of time off the painting.

This is a cute shirt I found for Terry.  I always kid him about being the CEO of all our reno's.  What a fun and cute shirt for him.

This is the color of the new floors going in starting tomorrow.  I think the light oak color will warm up the rooms with the white bit of sugar walls.  I cannot wait to show you all the changes.  We have accomplished a lot in these past three days.
Painted the entire Condo, shiplapped the dining room wall and started to renovate the kitchen.  We are hoping after the floors get put in this week and appliances delivered we can move in maybe on Thursday this week.

For now we are staying with my daughter and two grandgirls.  We have a house full.  Four dogs, two kids, my SIL and daughter Jen and Terry and I.  Terry and I are sleeping in my granddaughter's bed with all the barbies and stuffed animals.  The other night I rolled over to find Ken staring at me from the Barbie Dream house!!!!

It is fun family time but I will be so happy to be in my own bed and have all this reno stuff accomplished.  We have met a lot of the neighbors and they all seem so very nice.

Have a great week.  I will thank all of you that leave sweet comments ahead of time.  Without my computer in the condo yet and all the busy days I will not be able to respond to all your comments.  Please know I appreciate all of you that take time to leave a comment on my blog posts.  So very appreciated.

  1. Can't wait to see the final effect:-)
I must tell you that I also don't have a microwave and I never wanted one although I cook a lot. I don't need it. What for? After staying half of the year in the USA (long time ago) and eating all microwave food (I hated it) I promised myself that in my kitchen there won't be a microwave. And funny thing, as wedding gift we got 3 microwaves! I couldn't believe my eyes. Luckily we got rid of them:-) For me it's a useless appliance.
    Good luck with your renovation:-)

  2. Oh Kris, WOWOWOWOWOOWOOWW!!!! What can I say; I know you are super busy and you won't have time to chat but I am so excited for you! That huge living space now looks gloriously open, white and clean. What a space for you and those windows, Kris, they are stunning. That shiplap does wonders and we will be using that for our bedroom upstairs. I have an interesting story for you that made me think, "What would Kris do in this situation" but I'll wait to tell you in email when you are settled. Big hugs to you dear friend! Miss you!

  10. Amazing progress in a short amount of time! I had to go take a nap after reading this! You and your family made some great memories during this renovation. I'm sure the grandgirls loved getting the green light for graffiti. Someone will love the appliances you have donated. Has Buddy scoped out the best window for watching the neighborhood? Thank you for taking the time to share your (and your CEO's) progress. xoxo

  12. It is incredible how fast you guys work! Seriously, you two could open your own renovating/contractor business. An idea for when Terry retires? ;-) OK, you have to tell me about this spray painting of cabinets. Did you sand and prime the doors first? What kind of paint did you use? Because I've heard from all these cabinet painting contractors that you have to use enamel paint so that it lasts and it takes like two weeks to dry! And that it has to be done in a climate-controlled environment.

I wonder what in the world this woman ate for 25 years if she never cooked...no stove, oven or microwave! A couple of my friends don't have microwaves and neither does my mom, but they do use their stove and oven all the time. Truthfully, I hate my microwave because it's so big and bulky over my stove. The only thing we ever use it for is to heat up leftovers or for me to heat up my tea or coffee when it goes cold.

So exciting to see your progress...the shiplap on the big wall looks great.

  14. I can't believe how nice the house looks already Kris. It looks so bright and cheery now with the light colored paint and shiplap. I too can not believe about the kitchen and the lady not using it! I guess she did take out for all of those years? I can't wait to see the progress with it and I know it's going to be gorgeous. I love Terry's tshirt and so nice nice to have a handy husband. I hope Buddy will be happy in his new home too. Good luck.

  15. Oh my goodness Kris. You both have accomplished so very much already! Mercy...I am wore out thinking about all this work. But, oh girl...it is going to be totally awesome. I am loving renno already! I know your heart was sad leaving your sweet cottage but I so see this condo becoming a doll baby soon. Hugs and blessings to you dear Kris. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  16. It wasn't hard to imagine your style in that huge living room. Kitchens are always an issue...and so expensive to start messing with. That stove was my stove we just replaced. I loved it, but they basically aren't making them anymore. I have two ovens now in the new range and 9---yes 9, roasters that won't fit in either oven. UGH. Good luck, hope it all goes well, and I'm sure your magic will make it perfect! Sandi

  19. Gosh Kris - you have both made such fantastic progress on your new home! These changes have made such a difference to it already. I can totally understand that you cried when closing the door to your last sweet home for the last time. However, as you quite rightly say - off to the next chapter in your busy lives. Your new home will offer so many more different possibilities for you both. Hugs, Gilly

  22. Like everyone else, I'm amazed at what you've gotten done in so short a time, and good grief, what a difference already that the shiplap and paint have made. I love your new flooring and those big window alcoves are really nice. I would so love to have the space that our microwave takes up in the kitchen but men have to have their microwave. You have such a great family, Kris, everyone always pitching in and helping each other out. We're so fortunate in that way too and it does mean the world.

LOL I'm laughing at Ken staring at you? What do you think he wants? LOL!!!

  24. Wow and double wow! You guys have done more in 3 days then my husband and I have done in 5 years! I'm still "waiting" (for someone) to paint our kitchen cabinets. They are good "real" wood and just need paint, but neither one of us feels capable of doing it (or want to do it!). It always seems so daunting of a job. You guys paint like it's no big deal! Wish I had your energy... you both must run on energizer batteries! It's fun seeing what you've done already. Looks gorgeous and so bright and wonderful. I too miss the explanation of why you guys moved... could you maybe do a brief post as to why you had to (or wanted to ) move? Thanks! Marilyn

  31. Kris, it is looking so good so far. We found Behr paint when we painted the screened porch and have not looked at any other since. What a gorgeous stove and imagine not using it that much over years. I love the shiplap and I can't wait for what's coming next. Exciting!!xxoJudy

I know you will be so glad to get everything moved in and sleep in your own bed (without Ken). LOL. Got your sweet card. Thanks. FYI I got a new address book so you have a whole page. I couldn't believe I couldn't find an address book. Finally ordered one from Amazon. Try not to overdo. I know you want to get everything done. Hugs!
